Engineering Tool Prop: The One with the Yellow Crystal on the Handle

Engineering Tool Reproduction

Scotty had quite a number of different tools that he would use from time to time.  Often, these tools were used less as props (actually handled by actors) and more as set decorations (sitting inertly in the background, helping to paint the scene).

One of those props we saw just a handful of times was a metal and plastic contraption with some kind of yellow crystal greeblie on the handle.

We first see this thing lying on the floor in Engineering on board the Defiant in “The Tholian Web:”

We see it later in that same episode, as the transporter is being repaired:

Lastly, it shows up on the dusty tabletop in the opening teaser for the episode “The

 Empath:”

And here’s the Star Trek Phase II prop reproduction:

This thing–whatever it is–has a polished aircraft aluminum handle with the odd little yellow translucent plastic greeblie, and it has an octagonal business end with a circular opening.

As with so many of our props, I don’t know when we’ll see it in one of our productions.  But keep your eyes open.

Credit for the fabrication of this prop once again goes to prop maker Mr. Gaston Huckabay.

As always, questions, comments, feedback, and, of course, “shares,” “likes,” or “+1s” are always appreciated.
