Cawley Set to Appear in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek

Star Trek: Phase II Executive Producer James Cawley has spent the last week in California and three days of that time on the set of the new Star Trek movie as the guest of Producer / Director J.J. Abrams. A chance meeting on the Paramount lot resulted in Cawley being invited to tour the Trek movie set by Abrams. After several days on the lot, and hours talking with Abrams, Cawley admitted he was extremely optimistic about the film and enthusiastic about Abrams approach to the new movie due out this December. Cawley said that Abrams is extraordinarily focused on maintaining the philosophy of Star Trek and Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future, and that he is showing a reverent approach to the project and characters.

Cawley has had the opportunity to talk with Karl Urban (McCoy), Zachary Quinto (Spock) and his movie counterpart Chris Pine, who plays Captain Kirk and good-naturedly told Cawley that it was an honor to meet and get to know another “Kirk.” Quinto told Cawley that he has seen the Star Trek: Phase II episode “World Enough and Time” and that he thought it was great. Cawley said that he thinks the world of J.J. Abrams, saying, “J.J. is the warmest and nicest person, and he has treated me with such respect and kindness over the last few days. I have come to know him, respect him, and really come to appreciate his devotion to this project and the spirit of Star Trek.”

On the first day of his visit to the set, J.J. Abrams asked Cawley to extend his visit to California for a few more days, then told Cawley that he would have costumers fit Cawley for a new uniform and that he would include him in the film. Cawley’s casting call was set for 7:00AM, Wednesday, January 23, 2008. Cawley admitted that it was all very amazing and unbelievable. At this time, he wouldn’t say much more about his on-screen involvement other than he would be a member of the Enterprise crew. He said, “I don’t care if I speak or if I’m in the background-it is just an honor to be a part of this production.”

When asked specifics about the look of the bridge, costuming, and other aspects of the production, he quickly responded that he had agreed not to disclose any details and that he would strictly honor that agreement and the trust that had been placed in him by Abrams and Paramount. Cawley said, “Early on, I was concerned about the look of the Enterprise, but after meeting and getting to know J.J. and his perspective on this film, I’m no longer concerned with little details like that.” Cawley continued, “J.J. knows what he likes about Star Trek and that is Gene’s original vision-preserving that message is his primary concern.” Cawley said there were a number of great photos taken, but he would have to wait to share them until the folks at Paramount cleared their release. Cawley promised the exclusive story of his visit to the Star Trek set to his friend Anthony Pascale, which can be found at
