Another great effort brought forth by Cawley’s Crew. Yes, the sets, costumes, fx, etc are all excellent
in keeping with the theme of The Original Series. This story is also a testament to the spirit behind all
the great stories of that era, as well. Thanks for presenting it and words aren’t adequate enough to detail
how much I anticipate the next episode of the Phase II Saga.
May It Be Well With You
This was well done. Impressive. I’d like to know a little more about how you guys do this etc. Keep em rolling in, greay fun.
Simon
Good to see a fanbased series which actually equals… or, goes beyond the real spirit of Star Trek. At first, I was sceptic since I am a next gen generation, however, you all certainly found the keys needed to make your stories hit home. My compliments to your crew, actors and actresses… wonderfull job! Also, on a side note, it is quite… pleasing, to finally see same sex love is intergrated within Star Trek. Of course, this has been done by Star Trek Hidden Fronteer, but your series are at a higher production level, equalling the professional Star Trek saga (and it is good to see Hidden Fronteer actors in your episodes doing this). I think… I am in love. With your series, I mean of course… with warmest regards, RobinPhoenix
that was outstanding!
Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great to have a new episode! Look forward to watching it.
Other then the overalls that Ens Kirk is wearing?!?!? it was a good use of time!
Agreed. They must have been mentioned overalls somewhere, but to wear them on the bridge?? (and please lose the captain’s version of McCoy’s short-sleeved shirt) Also, when addressing the communications officer as “Lieutenant”, please put a stripe on her sleeve. Other than that, WELL-DONE!!! GREAT progression of personnel in rank, and position (AKA Chekov in Red transitioning to security/tactical duties). Backing off of having music every second of the episode is also a big step up. Keep up the GREAT work!!
Another great episode!!
My only criticism is that the lighting is too dark.
To be honest, the lighting is pretty true to the original series. Especially the colored lighting!
Much thanks! I spent a lot of time trying to recreate that look in a fashion that will work with today’s digital cameras. Glad it’s paid off!
Robert: I think you did a great job with the lighting. That`s the first thing I noticed watching this episode, and right there and then I said to myself: “that`s what was off!”. I notice an improvement from one episode to another, but lighting is key.
Also, I like the “diffuse” image resembling celluloid, but I believe I can tell when you`re using (maybe) a different camera, on the intercom close-ups for example.
Keep up the good work and greetings from the other side of the world, Nicolàs.
Hi Nicolàs, much thanks. This episode was intended to be a bit darker than some of the others (though I fear that the final version online is darker than the actual masters). And though largely we used the same camera for this entire episode, the cameras we use do change between episodes and during pickup shoots and reshoots.
There is a difference between the HD download here and the HD video on Youtube. The site download is severely crushed in the blacks. This can be really seen in the shot of the enterprise roughly at 56sec. So Id recommend the youtube ver. even if it is 300mb smaller. It has less grain artifacting too.
durrr, I forgot to add, since in comparison there is detail in the deflector of that shot where the darker one it is lost that the youtube most resembles what the production crew intended. But I could be wrong :p
I adjusted the YouTube version to correct transcoding errors, which brings it back to the level of the original HD files.
Great effort!!!! However I feel that the exterior shots of the big “E” in travel are better in previous New Voyages episodes. Keep up the great work!
Another Great episode. In the Sick Bay, during the Labor scene. It would’ve been too funny if Capt Kirk instructed Ens Kirk to
“Take up your security position in the corridor, AND get a haircut”
I also vote to lose the Thigh-high split overalls
A polished work. I was pleased to see that the music sequences were appropriate and well timed. I found myself appreciating this episode the more I watched it.
Great acting from the actress who played the mother; great episode overall. I think there was a TNG episode that dealt with this as well. If so, this episode makes a great prequel to it, while still expanding on the original concept. A rare combo.
Keep it up!
Were are the black people…no Uhura? There aren’t any walking by in the corridors etc. I thought the spirit of Gene Roddenberry and vision was bringing all people all races together. But I don’t see it being displayed in this version…it’s as if blacks don’t exist and I would guess for the production crew of this version of the show would prefer it that way. The acting is poor, but the sounds effects, visual effects are very good! Wish I could pay more compliments to this show…but at the moment it just not possible.
Actually, we feature anyone and everyone we can. Our casting of extras is only given one consideration for priority… if you are a crew member, and you wish to be an extra (and you fit the part (and available costumes) required), you get first dibs. That means our cast of extras is comprised both of crew and “outsiders” who have been selected for the roles – but at no time do we make other considerations, including by race, religion, sexual orientation, gender (except as appropriate to the character being played – it would be odd having a guy play a role that specifically had to be female, such as that of a pregnant woman), etc, etc).
We also do not in any way limit our crew selection in any such fashion. Alas, our extras are solely representative of the combination of crew who wish to be extras, and non-cast/crew who offer to be extras.
Uhura was not in every episode of ST:TOS. She is, however, in the other of these Phase II episodes. With these types of fan films, you use those you have available. If you were to watch the other episodes, you might not have had such a knee-jerk reaction to this one. Try World and Enough Time.
WOW! Some people might disagree with me I think this was the best episode that has been done so far. Science Fiction and Star Trek at it’s best. Extreme kudos to Anna Schnaitter her performance was spot on. I’m in love
Also kudos to Ayla Cordell. Great job everyone! A lot better telling of this story than the Next Gen version of it.
Outstanding episode. I thought the earlier episodes were a little slow and wordy, but this one was spot on. Production quality, editing, and acting easily beat much of what is on TV today. Great, great job, and I agree, far superior to the watered down STNG version. This is good sci-fi.
Actually, the episode “The Child” in Star Trek: The Next Generation was a watered down version of the original script which is seen here as Jon Povill and Jarron Summers wrote it. This episode is what the original writers intended for the episode.
Great episode.
With each episode, the quality of the show in every respect, gets better and better.
My only criticism, is the thigh-high split overalls, as an officer I doubt such wear would be acceptable to have while on duty, off duty it would be ok, but certainly not on duty.
(in my opinion, I would say to lose them altogether). Star Trek “fashion” as it were, was always top notch, I object to it more on that ground than on the grounds that a male is wearing it.
A perfect storm where brilliance meets love. While watching this, I realized that the cast, writers, camera crew, fx crew, sound crew, and myself, loves star trek so much, and understood the gravity of this script. Chekov made me laugh from his first line.
Bones, is that a relative of DeForest Kelley? I wish he woulda hammed up the Georgian accent a little, but there might be reasons he/they did not. I loved this, and will watch all the episodes, and thank you, to everyone involved, from the depths of my soul, thank you!
Well done! A great story and excellent presentation!
what a load of copied crap, nothing but a cheap knock off of the NG star trek, lol can’t you come up with your own shit,
Wrong – the TNG version was (if you want to call it that) the “cheap knock off” of the script originally written for the TOS crew. And heavily modified for that reason. Jon Povill (one of the co-authors of the script) wanted to see it done right, and revised the script for us – oh, and personally directed the episode.
Learn more before you speak.
Did you even read the “liner note” in the window for this episode? If you had, you might have noticed that TNG adapted it, not the other way around. And this one was infinitely better.
It’s a well documented fact that the TNG version was produced as a result of the 1988 writers’ strike, the producers had no scripts and were under pressure to commence shooting. They selected The Child from the unused scripts from the planned Phase Two series and adapted it.
As others have pointed out, you should check your facts before making such comments.
Ensign Kirk’s ‘jumpsuit”? REALLY?
His jumpsuit is an original made for the aborted Star Trek Phase II TV Series that we purchased a while back.
Excellent and amazing, thank you for this effort!
Great episode! I particularly like the action shots of the Enterprise and the alien vessel. Top notch detail.
Congrats to the cast and crew on another fantastic episode!
Loved the Child, thank you.
Soooo how do i get to watch the other episodes?
Simple – click on the other episodes pages and download or view online.
Where did you find this delightful child? She did a great job, as did everyone else in this episode. I liked the TNG version of this story, but this version is far better. The story is much richer and more emotionally compelling. Good job everyone. My only complaint is the messy hairstyles. I understand the guys not wanting to cut their hair for this project, so invest in some really strong hair gel to keep their hair out of their faces.
Hi Miri, Ayla is an aspiring actress, who happens to be the sister of Deniz Cordell (one of our crew).
As for the hair, it’s a 70′s thing. If you look up the BTS test shots for the aborted “Star Trek Phase II” TV series (especially for Xon, for instance), you’ll see the crazy 70′s hair.
Well, now that I think about it, I didn’t much care for 70′s hairstyles during the 70′s.
Was a lot easier though… “let it get long and wild!!!!” I’ve always found it interesting how many TV shows and movies definitely “age” in that respect.
Ayla made the episode great. Kudos to her and the rest of the cast.
As for hairstyles, at least Cawley isn’t sporting the Elvis do from the pilot.
^.^
I am downloading this episode now, and I must admit I had reservations, because of the whole whoopla over the rewriting of the episode. The Child was originally a Phase II script, that was brought into TNG and used basically in the way that the old Phase II had it, at least that’s what it seemed like. It will be interesting to compare the two.

First thing I noticed was that there are (so far) few differences between the New Voyages version, and the TNG version, except for the leukemia aspect. However, Deltans are bald, therefore why does our Deltan mother have a full head of hair?

With some slight changes, it’s a re-telling of the same story. The ship was threatened in TNG with the breakout of plasma plague within two hours of detecting that the containment shell was not holding its growth. In both storylines, the child born from the alien was the culprit, so to speak, and the key to the solution.
While I respect that the writer wanted to have a do-over and get the story right the second time, he should have gone to Gene Roddenberry and pressed for his story. He failed to do so, and New Voyages has simply failed in bringing us original material. I am hoping that after the THIRD chance to tell or re-tell this story, that we can finally leave it be.
Can’t wait for the next one, though.
John B.
This is a definately great series, Ive watched Trek for many years and Cannot say enough good about the actors here they do one Hell of a job… The actors for Bones/Chekov/Uhura are simply magnificent.. And this should be on Television.. Much superior to Deep Space Nine, Enterprise, and even Voyager. Keep it up.. And thumbs up for going out on a limb in the episode with Denise Crosby.. At the end I was crying.. as I was with the George Takei episode. Further I would suggest that you end more episodes on a happier note instead of a sad one. Otherwise you folks derserve an Oscar/Academy aware/Tony/ and you name it.
This is fantastic stuff. When I started watching these productions, I watched closely to see how well everyone imitated the original actors. Now I don’t care – they stand so very well on their own. Anna and Ayla do a great job in this – they really make the story sing. I agree with the others – this is better than the TNG version. I still can’t believe the level of detail in these shows, and those gorgeous beauty shots of the Enterprise. The only thing that seems a little bit thin is the sound in some scenes, but it’s a minor thing.
At 19:30 in McCoy’s sickbay there appear these really hi-tech props..plastic spray bottles…LMFAO, & really perfect for the look & feel of the TOS. You must understand that this is an amateur production, with a low budget, and yet in so many ways they have produced a truly amazing product. The discontinuities of the series and the humor are an obvious intentional replication…Well Done.
