STAR TREK: NEW VOYAGES NOMINATED

LOS ANGELES — TV Guide has nominated fan-produced Star Trek: New Voyages as Best Web SciFi Series in the magazine's Online Video Awards.

In its announcement, TV Guide said the awards "recognize the best and most innovative professional video programming being created for the Web" in 18 categories.

"It really is an honor just to be nominated," said Star Trek: New Voyages' executive producer, James Cawley. "The other nominees are well-funded, high-quality studio productions, and being listed alongside them makes our cast and crew feel proud."

Fans Vote for the Winners

Winners will be chosen by fan voting taking place now at www.tvguide.com/videoawards. The awards will be handed out on December 1 in Santa Monica, Calif., at the Barker Hanger, with a two-hour TV program to air nationally several days later on MyNetworkTV.

Many of the major broadcast and cable networks are represented among the nominees. In the SciFi category, Star Trek: New Voyages is the only entry produced by fans — and for a fraction of the studio-made entries.

The Nominees

The other three Webisode nominees in the science fiction category are:

Battlestar Galactica's Webisodes on the SciFi Channel's Web site, scifi.com.

The 4400, on the USA Network's site, usanetwork.com.

Afterworld, a $3-million animated series produced by Santa Monica, Calif.-based Electric Farm Entertainment, for MySpace TV on myspace.com.

Excerpts from all four nominees can be viewed on TV Guide's voting page.

TV Guide's full listing of the nominees in all 18 categories can be viewed here.

Rich Battista, Gemstar-TV Guide's chief executive officer said, "It's exactly the right time for the Online Video Awards. As you can see from our list of nominees, there is a wide range of innovative and high quality Web-only programming currently being created and we're excited to be among the first to single it out for recognition. We're looking forward to the outcome of fan voting in these 18 categories and to a terrific event, and a very entertaining television special."

Background on Star Trek: New Voyages

Star Trek: New Voyages is an independently produced Internet series created in 2003 by a group of fans, headed by Executive Producer James Cawley. The series is designed as a continuation of the original Star Trek, beginning in the fourth year of the starship Enterprise's five-year mission.

All of the series' episodes can be viewed at the Star Trek: New Voyages Web site.

Star Trek: New Voyages stars James Cawley as Captain Kirk, Jeffery Quinn as Mr. Spock, and John Kelley as Dr. McCoy. Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, serves as consulting producer.

Some of the original actors have returned to reprise their roles, including George Takei and Walter Koenig, as Sulu and Chekov, respectively. Members of Star Trek's production crew have also contributed to the show, including writers D.C. Fontana and David Gerrold.

The production is based in upstate New York.
