"World Enough and Time" to Premiere on August 23, 2007 at Worldwide Internet Event The time has come, the premiere date has been announced for Star Trek: New Voyages “World Enough and Time. August 23, 2007. Fans can join George Takei, James Cawley, Marc Zicree, Michael Reaves, and many others behind this outstanding Star Trek production to watch the premiere as it is happening via streaming video. Executive Producer James Cawley commented on the event on the New Voyages forum, “…the cool part is that we will be doing a LIVE Premiere Event with George Takei in Beverly Hills, Ca. and YOU all will be able to watch it LIVE via Streaming Video right here at startreknewvoyages.com! After the gala you will be able to view the episode right along with us in REAL TIME!!!” This is an unprecedented event for Star Trek: New Voyages and it seems appropriate for this exceptional episode. “World Enough and Time” is truly a New Voyages like fans have never seen before. One of the final edits of the episode was premiered for the cast and crew during the filming of “Blood and Fire.” The end credits rolled to the sound of applause, whistles, and cheers from those lucky enough to see the sneak peek. Cawley asked the crowd to rate it on a scale of one to ten. The crowd overwhelmingly responded “ten,” with a few shouts of “eleven” mixed in. Additional details will be announced over the next few weeks regarding the premiere event and how fans can participate. Keep checking back here for the latest news. (News Release - June 16, 2007) "World Enough and Time" to Premiere UPDATE Due to technical problems the "LIVE" premiere event will not take place. However, the ability to view the streaming episode will not be effected. Writer / Director Marc Scott Zicree asked that the following message be posted regarding this change in premiere plans. Sorry there's been so much confusion regarding the release of "World Enough and Time." We've been working so hard to finish it and set up the infrastructure for you all to see it that it's natural for things to fall through the cracks. First and foremost, our goal has been to create a terrific episode that will be entertaining and moving and long remembered. I feel very sure we've done exactly that -- and I'm very proud of what we at STAR TREK NEW VOYAGES (the more than 300 fans and Industry pros who worked on the episode) have accomplished. As to the reasons for streaming the episode and asking for registrations, the streaming comes from the fact that I've heard from many many people that they were unable to download the episode and enjoy it. I wanted it to be more accessible and readily seen. We'll soon see if that's the case. As to the registrations, it's vital we have accurate numbers as to who is watching the episode. Quite frankly, when we tell the network and the studio that millions have seen STNV, they shake their heads dubiously and say, "Prove it." We want to do just that. STNV will not be respected by the powers that be (or readily embraced by them) until we have solid numbers that will make them sit up and listen. It's just the way the world works, unfortunately. Anyway, sorry again for my tardiness in responding to your concerns. Once you see the episode, I'm sure you'll feel that all the bumps along the way were well worth it. I'm prouder of "World Enough and Time" than practically any other of my hundred-plus script sales to the networks. As my erstwhile co-producer Winston Engle has said of "World Enough," "No Network, No Studio, No Problem." We've made history, all of us, here, now, with this production. Thank you for being a part of it, and for making it worth doing. All good wishes, It's a wrap! "Blood and Fire" Wraps Principal Photography “It’s a wrap,” as they say. “Blood and Fire” completed principal photography in New York on Sunday, June 10th, or more accurately early in the morning on Monday, June 11th. Writer / Director David Gerrold called “cut” on the final scene at about 2:00AM. This concluded a 12 day shooting schedule, which saw many 16-hour days to shoot the 100+ page script. Guest stars Denise Crosby and Bill Blair round out the cast and crew from around the country and from around the world. “This was a labor of love for us all,” commented Executive Producer James Cawley, “David had a solid vision of what he wanted and I think we achieved it.” The project moves into post-production with editing, music, visual and sound effects, and other finishing touches ahead. No projected release date has been set and will not likely be set until the post-production work nears completion. He has played Cardassians, Klingons, Vulcans, Jem Hadar, and a number of other alien characterizations created by Michael Westmore and others. Not only does he posses extensive stage, screen, and television acting credits (both in and out of make-up), but he is an accomplished make-up artist in his own right. More than 300 people filled the theater seats to watch the premiere, cheering, applauding, laughing and crying, as the story unfolded. DAVE School graduates and Star Trek: New Voyages Visual Effects Team members, Joel Bellucci and Dave Berry, completed over 600 visual effects shots for this outstanding episode. George Takei attended the event and congratulated the graduates for their hard work and accomplishments, praising them for their teamwork and passion. Marc Zicree thanked all in attendance and read an emotional letter from writer Michael Reaves, who could not be at the event. James Cawley noted that the quality of the visual effects work was equal to, or better than, some previous Star Trek theatrical releases. The congratulations closed with James, Jeff Quinn, John Kelly, John Lim, Julianne Irons, Andy Bray, and the rest, giving the graduates an appreciative bow. The exciting evening was capped-off by a gathering where cast, crew, and graduates shared food, drink, and a few laughs after the premiere. RICK STERNBACH JOINS ST:NV TEAM FOR BLOOD AND FIRE Emmy and Hugo Award-winning graphic artist Rick Sternbach has joined the New Voyages team to design some specific costume elements and prop equipment for the upcoming episode, "Blood and Fire." Rick, along with Andy Probert, were the first two graphic and design artists hired for Star Trek: The Next Generation. Many of the best known props, such as the new style hand phasers, tri-corders, PADDs, and the Communicator Badge, as well as many other ships, sets, costumes, Trek Tech, (just about anything else you can think of) were designed by Sternbach for "The Next Generation", "Deep Space Nine", "Voyager" and several of the Star Trek movies. Along with Michael Okuda, Sternbach established and expanded many the concepts of the technology encountered in the Star Trek universe, including Warp Technology, Inertial Dampener Systems, the Transporter, and Structural Integrity Fields, which led to developing the now familiar Tech Manuals for several of the series. "We were really having a bit of difficulty with some specific equipment and costume design elements for this episode," said Senior Executive Producer James Cawley. "Rick has agreed to tackle these designs, which will give him an opportunity to develop some TOS era technology. I can't wait to see what he will come up with." CAVES AND TENAPA JOIN STNV TEAM Star Trek: Hidden Frontier Executive Producer Rob Caves and Producer/Actor J.T. Tepnapa join the Star Trek: New Voyages team as Associate Producers for Blood and Fire. Hidden Frontier holds the distinction of producing 50 episodes of the longest running Star Trek fan series on the web. The series draws to a close and concludes this Spring in a feature-length final episode. "I honestly wasn't sure we'd get past that first season, or if everybody would lose interest and move onto something else." Caves said. When not making Hidden Frontier, Caves works as a Film/Video Editor in Hollywood, California. Prior to that he worked as a Post-Production Assistant for 20th Century Fox, and as a Production Assistant for Stone Stanley Productions while in college. Tepnapa is the Casting Director and a Producer for the series, as well as playing Lt. Commander Cory Aster, Engineer of the U.S.S. Excelsior. Tepnapa has written and produced a number of successful and award-winning independent projects and has formed his own production company, Blue Seraph Productions. "I have always been a fan of Hidden Frontier," said STNV Executive Producer James Cawley. "I look forward to working with both of them to make this extraordinary episode." DOCHTERMAN JOINS ST:NV FOR "BLOOD AND FIRE" Daren R. Dochterman, visual effects designer, illustrator, Visual Effects Supervisor for the 2000 Director’s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Production Illustrator for the pilot episode of Star Trek: Voyager (who might be better known to Star Trek fans as the Godfather of “remastered” Trek) will be joining the Visual Effects team as VFX Supervisor for Star Trek: New Voyages’ fourth episode, Blood and Fire. Dochterman has worked on such films as the new Rush Hour 3, X-Men 3-The Last Stand, Poseidon, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and many more well known productions, (Check out his IMDB listing at www.imdb.com) but it was his original pitch to update the visual effects for Star Trek (TOS) that has garnered him much attention in the fan community. Dochterman’s affection for Star Trek is well known and fans appreciate the loving attention he gives to the detailed images of the classic Trek U.S.S. Enterprise. Dochterman originally approached Paramount about the subject of “remastering” the effects for the original episodes in 2000. Although not ultimately chosen to helm the project we now know as Star Trek Remastered, (to the chagrin of many fans) Dochterman continues to produce beautiful Star Trek illustrations, many featured in the Pocketbooks Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendar series and recently published book of illustrations by the same name. As Dochterman joins the team for Blood and Fire, he has already produced new opening credits for the episode. He will be providing guidance and suggestions to the team as they navigate one of the most effects intensive projects so far. Daren's feel for the classic Star Trek look is right on the money,” said Executive Producer James Cawley. For more information on Daren Dochterman and his work, go to www.betafive.com or www.trekenhanced.com. RETURN OF A ROGUE Best known for his role as Klingon warrior, General, and ultimately Chancellor Martok on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, veteran Trek actor John (J.G.) Hertzler returns to fill the shoes of the ever-lovable charlatan and rogue, Harcourt Fenton Mudd. Hertzler will also direct the episode, currently titled, “The Sky Above, The Mudd Below.” Harry Mudd comes across loud and clear, it will be a hoot to embody the ol’ privateer… Harry Mudd is a cross between a giant Ferengi and a gypsy king,” said Hertzler after reading the script penned by Trek author, Howard Weinstein. Hertzler is known for his versatility as an actor, playing a number of roles on Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise, as well as many other stage and screen roles. “J.G. has a great sense of humor and I know he will make a great Harry Mudd,” remarked Producer James Cawley. “It takes a special actor to recreate the role of one of the greatest thorns in Captain Kirk’s side.” Pre-production work continues on the project, which has not yet been assigned a shoot date. “There are a few key roles and details we still have to nail down before we establish a firm shooting schedule,” said Cawley. For more on J.G. Hertzler: http://www.imdb.com Written by Veteran Star Trek Author Howard Weinstein Howard Weinstein delivers “The Sky Above, the Mudd Below" to Star Trek: New Voyages Producers. This special episode of New Voyages will see the return of a fan favorite, the notorious privateer Harcourt Fenton Mudd. Weinstein became a professional writer at age 19 when he sold “The Pirates of Orion” episode to the animated Star Trek series in 1974. He was all of 23 when he sold his first novel, “The Covenant of the Crown,” to Simon & Schuster’s fledgling series of Star Trek books. With the pending publication of “The Blood-Dimmed Tide,” part of Simon & Schuster’s six-part e-book series Mere Anarchy, his Star Trek writing career now spans 33 years. Over that time, Howard’s Star Trek-related credits include six novels, 60 comic book issues, two graphic-novel story collections, story-development assistance on Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and contributions to the recent short-story anthologies Deep Space 9: Tales of the Dominion War and Constellations. He wrote a special essay on the meaning and legacy of Star Trek in BenBella Books’ new 40th-anniversary anthology Boarding the Enterprise. Howard says, “I’ve been a Star Trek fan since the beginning. I’ve also had the good fortune to be a guest speaker at Star Trek conventions every year since 1976, so I’ve had lots of interaction with the most loyal fans in the galaxy. I’ve seen how Star Trek inspires creativity from fans – art, music, costumes, and performances. But the first time I saw the work by the New Voyages gang, I thought they set a new standard for dedication.” “While I’ve enjoyed all the Trek series and movies,” Howard adds, “the original is the one I grew up with and the closest to my heart. So I’m thrilled to be have the unexpected chance to write one more TV episode about those classic characters and to see the New Voyages team bring them to life.” With Howard’s New Voyages romp “The Sky Above, the Mudd Below,” Kirk and his crew have an encore encounter with one of the show’s all-time favorite characters, lovable rogue Harcourt Fenton Mudd. Star Trek novels by Howard Weinstein: Star Trek: The Original Series titles: Star Trek: The Next Generation titles: Pre-production ramping-up for “Blood and Fire” by David Gerrold As pre-production on David Gerrold’s “Blood and Fire” continues, additional guest cast members are announced for the upcoming episode. Bobby Rice is already slated to join the New Voyages crew as Ensign Peter Kirk, nephew of Captain James Kirk. A recent addition to the team is Evan Fowler, who will play Lt. Alex Freeman, a significantly pivotal role in “Blood and Fire.” Evan recently participated in a Los Angeles audition, out performing 50 other actors for the role. Also joining the New Voyages team for this episode is actor and producer, Nick Cook, of Star Trek: Intrepid, a Star Trek: TNG era production due out in early 2007. A life long Star Trek fan, Cook has recently finished filming the first adventure of the U.S.S. Intrepid with a group of close friends in Scotland, which is currently in post-production. The production values of Intrepid are among the highest in recent offerings of fan-based productions. “Blood and Fire” was originally pitched for consideration as a Star Trek: The Next Generation script by Gerrold in the 1980’s, but was rejected for what was then considered too controversial of a storyline, which dealt with sensitive social issues. Written by David Gerrold, with teleplay by New Voyages team member and producer, Carlos Pedraza, “Blood and Fire” is scheduled for a June 2007 shoot. A Reason to Give Thanks
